SuperTrapp Cautions

I just installed the muffler on my 99. It's a great addition to the bike and worth every penny, but the installation did NOT go smoothly.

The instructions are only generic instructions about tuning the sound by adding and removing disks. As a result, I didn't realize that the muffler doesn't fit all the way on the header the way the stock muffler does--it stops a half-inch shy of a collar on the header. I only found this out by calling SuperTrapp. That was after I tried heating the muffler pipe on my kitchen stove, hoping to expand it enough to fit all the way on the header!

What's more disconcerting, because the muffler doesn't go all the way on, I was able to use only one of the two bolts that secure the muffler to the separate muffler bracket. I'm sure the muffler is securely fastened with just the one bolt, but this is just poor design.

Also, since the instructions suck, there is no way for you to know how crucial it is that you use the provided high-temp lubricant on the disk bolts, or that over-tightening the bolts can flatten the disks and render them useless. Customer support recommended a quarter-turn past snug.

Finally, she recommended using a muffler patch, such as Permatex, on the connection to the header. Otherwise, it may leak.

And, yes, she agreed that the instructions suck.

Like I said, I'm totally pleased with the result (provided the muffler doesn't rust through after the first winter). But it was a struggle brought on solely by SuperTrapp's lousy instructions.
